When you begin playing live poker, you have to think of it as a hobby. How much would you be willing to spend for an evening of entertainment without risking the rent money?

You also have to consider your level of skill. If you are a beginner, you don’t want to play in a game with $20/$40 limits. If you’re an advanced player, you won’t want to waste your time at $2/$4 limits.

Some of the books I’ve read say you should bring about 30 “Big Bets” to the casino. So, if you would feel comfortable at $3/$6 you should bring about $180.

Don’t buy in for all of it at once. Maybe buy in for 20 big bets at first. This will give you enough ammunition to play with, without feeling that you have everything at risk. If you get low on chips, you can buy in for the rest of the money, or just head home.

Edit: I am specifically talking about Limit poker. I think Tyler is talking about No-Limit. That’s another thing to consider.
