Popular Group of Card Games
Article by stickystebee
Poker is an extremely popular group of cards games, with many different types of games and rules. The earliest known game to include similar features of pokers, such as bluffing, was around the 15th century in Germany. Poker also closely resembles the Persian game of As Nas; some saying that poker may be the derivative. The general consensus is that poker was derived from various games, with the key separation being betting.
The 1970′s saw a huge increase in the popularity of the game, with modern tournaments, such as the World Series of Poker, becoming widespread in American casinos. There are also variations on the game of poker itself, Texas Hold’em being most popular and other types such as draw poker, stud poker and Omaha Hold’em. Of course, each game has both similar and differing rules and game play, such as a high-low split or wildcards. Poker’s popularity met an unprecedented expansion at the beginning of the 21st century, mostly due to the introduction of online poker and casinos, as well as the creation of a hole-card camera, in which the game become more interactive to watch and a spectator sport. The best known of these televised tournaments are the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker, drawing in large audiences and offering huge pots and money payouts. These tournaments are growing exponentially, due to the flood of users on online poker sites, in which a player can win entry into a tournament via online play.
Free online poker was played as early as the late 1990s in the form of a chat type-site. The first actual online card room to offer real money games was Planet Poker. The first real money poker game was dealt on January 1, 1998. From here on, popularity increased on a massive scale, with Christiansen Capital Advisors stating that online poker profits ballooned from .7 million in 2001 to .4 billion in 2005. Online poker may be so popular due to the fact that someone with relatively no experience with the game, who may be intimidated by the traditional casino setting, can play online in anonymity if desired and learn from there. Also, the online setting for poker is generally much cheaper than a casino, as the overhead costs are much lower and adding tables or players for example, would not consume valuable space as it would in a physical casino.
There can be disadvantages in online poker, such as fraud and collusion. These issues can also be found in any conventional casino. However, online sites do have extensive measures in place to catch this type of activity, such as employees being able to check the hand history of cards that were previously played by any player, therefore noticing patterns of behaviour that are more difficult to detect in a traditional casino (colluding players can merely fold their hand without anyone knowing the strength or cards). Also, there are methods in place to prevent players at the same household or known open proxy servers from playing the same table. Also, some people may consider online poker a disadvantage to their personal game, as body language, reactions and patterns cannot be physically visualized. For some, this may interfere with their game, and others it may work as an advantage.
Recently, PokerStars, being the world’s largest online poker site, smashed the Guinness World Record for the largest online poker tournament. 35,000 poker players took part in the tournament, costing .00 to buy in, on December 28, 2008. PokerStars guaranteed a 0,000 prize pool, with the winner taking a ,000 first prize (MSNBC). In 2008, the biggest online poker winner (High Stakes poker, from Ladbrokes, Prima and Full Tilt) was David Benyamine. Since January 1st, Benyamine has made approximately ,075,124.04 playing both Pot Limited Omaha poker and No Limit Hold’em. The second biggest winner raked in just over 3.5 million dollars.
