Different Casino Poker Tournaments

Article by Laney Bobby

Life and Poker has common ground to share; it’s variety that adds a dash of spice to both. Poker, being present in so many forms makes each and every tournament a different one, both in terms of rules as well as in terms of excitement. While some of the Poker tournaments are based on a mix of several different games (e.g. H.O.R.S.E. events; a combination of Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Stud and Stud Eight), others like the Better and Dealer’s Choice events allows a player to choose from a menu. However, most of the Poker tournaments feature at least one form of stud (e.g. seven-card stud, seven card high-low stud) or community card poker (e.g. Omaha Hold ‘em) offered with three options: fixed-limit, pot limit and no limit.

Though ardent Poker players arrange for informal tournaments every now and then, serious ones have always been the monopoly of large clubs, UK Casinos and online Poker rooms, being arranged on a daily basis. Aside from these, there are Poker cruises that offer tournaments at sea. And the last two years witnessed the World Series of Poker events taking place in Hotel Rio, Las Vegas. Another Poker tournament that took place at the same location is the World Poker Tour championship, though the event never got the media exposure like the World Series that was shown on ESPN.

But if we take publicity under consideration, it’s the European tournament (Poker Million) that takes the cake; the event has now reached its sixth year and is telecasted by Sky Sports on a regular basis. The legacy of the Late Night Poker television show thus continues. However, we must also mention the perennial Poker tournaments besides the seasonal ones. The first name on the roster would belong to the Caribbean Poker Adventure, a series of open tournaments that occur throughout the Caribbean, followed by LA Poker Classic, the World Poker Challenge, the Legends of Poker, The United States Poker Championship and Ultimate Poker Challenge; these all happen to be regular tournaments where a ,000 entry fee is considered quite normal.

Now it’s the time to explain how Poker tournaments are played; though styles vary, but the basics remain the same. It starts with paying a fixed entry fee or a buy-in, which fetches the player a certain number of Poker chips that translate to the play money, in the form of a multiple of the entry fee. The option of a re-buy or buy-back of the chips is limited; thus once the chips are exhausted, the player is chucked out of the tournament. Though governed by the managing body, the termination of Poker tournaments also depend on the mutual agreement of players at times. It is done just to lower the risk of loss; instead of letting a single player take all the booty, the remaining ones share the prize according to the chips they have won.

Prize distribution in Poker tournaments occurs in three different ways:

* Fixed: Each winner is subjected to a preset payoff amount.

* Proportional: Payouts depend on a scale based on percentage, which is again determined by taking into account the number of participants. The payout amount is variable and is directly proportional to the number of players.

EU countries handle different online gambling policies

Every country in the EU can have their own policy regarding online gambling in casino or pokerroom after approval from the EU. Now Norway will make a new law to ban foreign online casinos from entering Norway.

Only Norsk Tipping is allowed to offer gambling games to their people, but 4% of the Norwegians gamble on a website which doesn’t have a licence in Norway. Norsk
Tipping wants the government to change the law and to block internetproviders who allow foreign gambling sites to enter the country.

The Norwegian law regarding online gambling is similar as the law in the US. Also in Norway they try to block money transaction from and to foreign gambling sites.  There are 253 online gambling operators in Norwegian language who accept the Norwegian currency.

Another country which is busy with making new laws to legalize online gambling is the Netherlands, where free slots are very popular. At the moment only Holland Casino is allowed to offer casino games. Online casinos where Dutch player can play in their own currency and language are offering illegal gambling activities and the Dutch government is loosing a lot of money.

To control gambling addiction and to receive more taxes the Netherlands will legalize online gambling and will supply 5-10 gambling operators a licence to offer casino games. The plans for this new law will be integrated in January 2012 where the government can block illegal gambling sites.

In France and Italy online gambling is legalized and the inhabitants of these countries are only allowed to play in casino with licence from the government. Casino en poker operators paid a lot of money to get a licence and they have to fullfill very strict requirements to stay actiove in these countries.

What will happen with the EU will stay a big question. It would be good to have one law for whole europe so everybody knows what he can do and what is illegal. It will make this billion euro business more transparant and easier to control money laundring and fraud activities.

But at the moment the EU gives every member freedon to apply their own rules which is actually against the policy of the EU – a free way for companies to offer their product in Europe.

Playing poker at the Commerce Casino? Different types of texas hold em?

Hi,

I’m new to poker, but really enjoy it. I live near the Commerce casino in LA, so I deciced to pay a visit. To my surprise, I was totally lost! Need your help. I have 2 main questions.

Question 1: I tried playing $1 and $2 blinds. I had to buy in with $40… but I thought only tournaments had buy-ins? Does this mean I could get up whenever I want?

Something I didn’t understand while playing was betting. An employee told me that if you want to re-raise, it has to be twice as much as the last raise… *kinda confused* So, if they blinds are $1/$2, what is the minimum you can raise pre-flop? ($4 on top of $2 = total of $6)

Question 2: There are different type of hold em games (no limit, high limit, etc.) Can you please explain the difference?
