How does one become a casino dealer?
And how much on average do casino dealers make? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Where do you live? Here in Australia it takes two weeks, you learn the easy games like blackjack then progress as you learn more. They only make a basic wage as dealers aren’t allowed to take tips here. But if a player wants tip you, just tell them to tip the waitress and let the waitress know that it is you he is giving the tip to and the waitress can take her little cut.

I work on a riverboat casino, and here you really need to start in another job in the casino, then when they need dealers they give classes to anyone that already works here. But…. this casino is well known for dealers making alot of money. Other casinos in the area will hire experienced dealers, but they don’t hire someone how just took a class somewhere and applied for a job with no work experience. Dealers make minimum wage, but make all their money through tips. Each casino is different, some share tips others keep their own tips. I have heard of dealers bringing home as much as $100,000 a year and as little as $25,000 a year. It really depends on what part of the country and you are dealing.

In many casinos you need to work on the floor in some other position for at least 6 months and then wait for a dealer school to open up. Then you can apply for it and hope you get in. Also you could go to Vegas and take a dealing class there and hopefully apply off the street.

From reading the other answers I guess it does depend on where you are. A dealing school would be your best option I think. If you’re thinking about going into blackjack the course is about 8 weeks, less if you get it down sooner. Learning craps and roulette along with blackjack will give you a lot more options of where you can work. Craps takes several months to learn and years to really be good at.
It all depends on where you work as to how much you can make. There are places out there where the dealers keep their own tips and more where they all pool. I’ve seen as little as $20,000/ year up to over $100,000. Generally, it’s a pretty good paying job though. Most places you should make at least $120 a day or better in tips plus your hourly wage.

Here is Las Vegas you need to go to dealer school first, then start at the smaller casinos and work your way up to the nicer ones. Getting a different job at a casino and waiting for them to send you to dealer school won’t cut it. Like the previous poster said, dealer school can take 8 weeks or more depending on the games you learn.
When you first start out, you will be in a small casino with low limit tables working the swing or crappy (graveyard or weekday morning) shifts. All dealer everywhere make minimum wage plus tips, so you’ll be making about $6 an hour. It takes at least 6 months to get into the strip casinos where the real money is, but could take as much as a couple of years. Once you get there though, there’s quite a bit of money in dealing. The average strip dealer probably makes $40-50k a year, with the evening and weekend workers at a place like Bellagio making $100k and up. Do not expect to get to that level for many years though.
Oh yeah, and if you can’t pass a background or credit check, don’t bother. A criminal record of a low credit score will be an automatic red flag and you won’t get hired anywhere.

I worked as a dealer in the UK, and Ireland, and on Holland America line too. I got into dealing as i answered an advertisement in the newspaper. they gave me some basic numeracy tests, and a colour blindness test, and i got the job.
In the UK, the money’s pretty lousy, and there’s no tipping allowed, but in Ireland the money is better, and tips are allowed.
I’ve since moved to Australia, and as mentioned in a previous post, tips are not allowed here either, and i can’t put up with the idiots who come in the casino and make me work hard all night for little reward. If you wanna work in Las Vegas I’d recommend you go to an independent card school and pay to learn the skills needed. you can make a lot of money in Vegas doing this job, and the majority of the customers aren’t the same sort of degenerates you’d get night in night out in a provincial UK or Irish casino. but you might have to have a record check and drugs testing, so stay off the pot for a while hey!!
good luck

My neice is one and she took a 4 week class, then she applied at the casino and was hired, Some casinos have back ground checks and drug tests. Look onlne for a card dealing class.
