I’ve banned myself from all casinos in California. Yet I still play everytime I get a paycheck. I would lose either the first or second day and have no money for 2 weeks. I’ve tried Gamblers Anonymous, it doesn’t help for me. I still go play right after the meetings. What should I do? I don’t play online, just live poker games at casino. I am thinking of telling the secuity guard at the door, but I don’t want to be arrested.

You are gambling because it fills a void in your life. At least that is why I gamble. You have to figure out why you gamble. I gamble because life is so boring and monotonous. When I gamble I like the challenge and the excitement. I have learned to control it and not let it become a problem by finding other hobbies that satisfy those needs. Instead of cursing yourself for gambling your pay check away reward yourself when you manage to avoid playing one night. Instead of going to play poker go to a movie or take yourself or a friend out to dinner. You will spend less money and the time will go by and you will forget about gambling for a while. Usually the dinner or the movie will satisfy your urge for stimulation just enough to get you through. If you relapse don’t get angry with yourself. Don’t get that negative mindset that says “Well, its to late you have already screwd up so you might as well just go all in.” Instead say, well I lost that hand ( meaning you relapsed, not an actual poker hand, lol) but I’m going to cash in my chips and walk away with what I’ve got. Soon it will get easier to walk away from the poker table. You could also treat it like a job. The quickest way for me to get board with something is to treat it like a job. Good luck my friend, only you can change yourself and it starts with a positive attitude, it sounds cliched but its true.

You’ll need to trust someone. Trust someone to hold your money for you. Don’t think of excuses not to trust. I mean REALLY – what’s the worst that’s going to happen?!? Are you afraid they will ROB you of your money??? How would this be any different from you losing it at a casino? Trust someone! They won’t steal your money.
One more thing – a casino will NOT arrest you for trying to get in the door. If you think telling the security guard to keep you out will help, then go ahead and do that.

if poker is your addiction then you should have no problem playing online for free but since you seem to have to have money on the line it sounds to me like your addiction is not poker, your addiction is the high you get from winning because, no offense, it sounds like you barely come out on top.
i have 3 suggestions for you…
1. you said you tend to spend your paycheck as soon as you get it. well set up a direct deposit for your checks and have your funds transfered into a trustworthy friend or family members account and only allow for your trustee to provide you with the money you need for bills and such until you have established a healthy bank roll (i personally did this for myself about a year ago and have since then added, or i should say maintained, a healthy bankroll almost 10 g’s to the date)
2. get yourself a poker book, read it and then read it again. take notes, create charts and run scenarios in the comfort of your own home until you have developed a W I N N I N G strategy and not a gambling one (someone suggested this to me and i took them up on it and i can now truly say that i have been able to double-up and walk away at least 85% of the time that i play low-limit cash games, $1-2 to be specific and theres nothing wrong with making an extra 200 bucks every now and then).
3. you have got to learn to limit your time spent at the casino. for instance if you know that today they are only running $5-10 and $10-20 no limit and tommmarow they will have $1-2 no limit and $3-6 limit you need to learn to convince yourself that you should go tommarow and only play low limit. you wont make as much playing low limit, but you wont lose as much either. if it is still a problem, bring a friend with that you can count on to not let you bet more than your set amount you have for your day at the casino.
